"Unfinished Christians: Ritual Objects and Silent Subjects in Late Antiquity"

Abstract: "Beginning in the mid-fourth century, large numbers of adults sought to convert to Christianity, now a newly legalized religion. What can we know about ordinary Christians’ experiences when they gathered in ritual settings? This talk will focus on one series of rituals: preparation for conversion through the rites of baptism and how metaphors of fabrication shaped the identities of ordinary Christians, that is to say non-monastic, non-clergy, adult men and women, and enslaved, freed, and free persons and how they learned through their senses, emotions, and bodies to become Christians in eastern Mediterranean cities."

The Hardigg Family Fund supports the annual visit of a scholar designated as the Hardigg Family Fellow to Religion 85, which is the culminating experience of the Religion major, restricted to and required of all senior Religion majors. The Hardigg Family Fellow meets with students in class to discuss his or her work and also engages with students more informally in conversations outside of class. The Fellow also typically presents a faculty colloquium or public lecture in conjunction with their visit to campus.
