Lecture title: "Jesus and Judaism: How Bad History Creates Bad Theology”

Abstract: Despite their sincere rejection of antisemitism, far too many Christians mistakenly depict Jesus’s Jewish context as xenophobic, legalistic, elitist, militaristic, and misogynist and to depict Jesus as the only Jew who promotes universalism, places compassion over law, demonstrates solidarity with the poor, counsels peace, and respects women. Where do these false depictions of Judaism originate and how does knowledge of first-century Jewish practice and belief both correct these misunderstandings and lead to better Jewish-Christian relations?
