Workshop on Islamic Ritual
Two-day workshop: Saturday-Sunday, February 29- March 1, 2020
Convened by Kevin Reinhart, Associate Professor of Religion

Islamic ritual is at the core of what it means to be a Muslim. Oddly, in the last 50 years there has been very little attention paid to these core activities, perhaps on the assumption that their significance is obvious.

With the support of the Leslie Humanities Center, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Religion, on Feb 29 and March 1 there will be an informal workshop on the study of Islamic canonical rituals. The first day will be a discussion of the sources on which we draw (law/ritual guides, ethnographies, pietistic texts), as well as theoretical approaches we have found useful. The second day will be informal presentations of how the participants are studying particular rituals, drawing from the sources discussed, and using methods we have found useful.

This will be an informal event with a focus on conversation and disseminating information on practices, texts, and methods.
