Kevin Reinhart specializes in Islamic religious studies. He was trained in the study of religion at Harvard (M.A., 1978; Ph.D., 1986) and in Middle Eastern and Arabic Studies at the University of Texas, Austin (1974); he joined the faculty of Dartmouth in 1986. His research focuses on Islamic legal thought, primarily in the pre-modern period, and the contemporary appropriation of the Islamic heritage. His book, Before Revelation: The Boundaries of Muslim Moral Knowledge, which is a study of Islamic theories of moral knowledge, was published by SUNY Press in 1995. He has just finished a book on the variety of Islamic practices in different locales, called Lived Islam. He has lived for long periods of time in many Middle Eastern countries including Egypt, Turkey, Yemen, and Morocco. He is currently involved in projects in Qatar and Turkey.
