On Friday, May 3, students enrolled in Religion 43 (Buddhism in America) were able to enjoy a very special guest lecturer: George Takei of "Star Trek" fame. During the session, George spoke movingly of the role of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in his life, the role of Buddhism in sustaining Japanese Americans during their internment-camp experience throughout WWII, and the pioneering role of Jodo Shinshu Buddhist clergy in performing gay weddings, several decades earlier than any other American clergy—including George's own wedding (to Brad Takei) in 2008.
