Timothy M. Baker studies late antique and medieval religious history and manuscript traditions, with a particular emphasis on high medieval monastic theology and exegesis. His doctoral work explores twelfth- and thirteenth-century Cistercian texts, investigating Cistercian interpretations of the monastery as a sacred space and a sacred bridge between the world of creation and the realm of the divine.

Timothy's courses examine biblical cosmological narratives, the development of Christianity in late antiquity and the Middle Ages, practices of "ascending into God" in medieval Latin Christianity, and women's roles in the development of Christian spirituality.

He also teaches in the Humanities Program and in the Institute for Writing and Rhetoric.
