The great British creative team of Powell and Pressburger filmed the story of a conventful of Anglican nuns overwhelmed by the sensuality of the Indian environment and released it in the year of India's independence. Their story's Himalayan locale is an Orientalist fever dream--lush colors, spectacular vistas, seething natives--and was fabricated entirely on sets outside of London. Repression, attraction, exoticization, incomprehension: Powell and Pressburger show us the colonial encounter as a dysfunctional romance.
