Salgado Maranhao, one of Brazil's leading contemporary poets, won Brazil's highest award, the Premio de Poesia da Academia Brasileira de Letras, for the year 2011, and the prestigious Jabuti in 1999. In addition to eight books of poetry, he has written song lyrics and made recordings with some of Brazil's leading jazz and pop musicians.

Alexis Levitin, Professor of English at SUNY Plattsburgh, has extensively translated from Portuguese and won numerous awards and grants, including those from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Gulbenkian Foundation. His translation of Maranhao's first collection in English, Blood of the Sun, will appear this year. Alexis Levitin is also a former professor at Dartmouth College.
